Honoring Russian Language Day and Pushkin’s Legacy
On June 6th, Plekhanov University in Dubai joins the UN-established annual celebration, celebrating Russian Language Day as well as the legacy of Alexander Pushkin. As an educational institution proudly upholding Russian academics in the international arena, we recognize the significance of this day not only as a tribute to a rich linguistic heritage but also as an opportunity to reflect on the enduring impact of Russian literature.
Russian Language Day was established by the United Nations in 2015 to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity. The celebration happens to coincide with the birthday of Alexander Pushkin, who was born on June 6th [O.S. 26 May], 1799. Pushkin is widely regarded as the father of modern Russian literature and is celebrated for shaping the Russian literary language with elegance, clarity, and innovation. His contributions remain central to Russian identity and literary education worldwide.
Pushkin’s influence extends far beyond poetry. His works, such as Eugene Onegin, The Bronze Horseman, and The Queen of Spades, are foundational texts that continue to inspire readers, writers, and scholars. Through his mastery of language, Pushkin transformed the literary landscape of his time, merging classical traditions with uniquely Russian themes and expressions. His legacy established a standard for literary excellence that remains unmatched in Russian literature.
At Plekhanov University in Dubai, we take pride in celebrating the rich Russian language. Our academic mission is enriched by the global significance of the Russian language, which connects millions of people across continents through literature, diplomacy, science, and education.
Our campusis a growing vibrant hub for literary and cultural engagement. The university proudly hosts “Filial’nik,” a creative space inspired by the iconic kvartirnik, where students and guests share poetry, music, and ideas in a warm, collaborative atmosphere. We also recently welcomed the final round of the international Living Classics competition, where the top young reciters from across the UAE gave powerful performances of Russian literary works—an inspiring testament to the enduring relevance of Russian literature for new generations.
This year, our university also hosted the Russian Language Olympiad with the support of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. This event became an important part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting the Russian language and encouraging interest in studying native culture abroad.
As we mark this important day, we honor the power of language to preserve culture, inspire creativity, and unite diverse communities. In remembering Pushkin and the beauty of the Russian language, Plekhanov University in Dubai also affirms its commitment to fostering an environment of cultural understanding and academic excellence.
