Plekhanov Russian University of Economics Among Top Universities in the First International BRICS University Ranking
29 May 2025
The Association of Ranking Compilers has prepared the first pilot version of the BRICS countries' university ranking, based on the model of the international "Three University Missions" ranking and adapted to reflect the national characteristics typical of BRICS member states.
The final list includes 600 educational institutions from ten member countries of the alliance: Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, China, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and South Africa. China has the highest number of ranked universities, with 207 institutions featured. Russia follows with 161 universities, and India ranks third with 93 institutions.
Plekhanov Russian University of Economics ranks in the 126–150 range. A total of 31 Russian universities made it into the top 150 of the ranking.
Representatives of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics are part of the joint working group of the Russian Rectors' Union, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Academy of Education on academic leadership. They also participate in public councils under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, the Ministry of Education of Russia, and Rosobrnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science) on the international positioning of Russian education.
In the methodology of the new ranking, certain indicators differ from those used in the “Three University Missions” ranking, taking into account the specific characteristics of higher education institutions in the BRICS countries. In particular, greater importance is given to students’ victories in international academic competitions, while the university’s budget carries less weight. Additionally, a new metric has been introduced for the first time — the number of research publications produced in collaboration with international colleagues from BRICS countries.
